Essential Vocabulary For Mongolian Nomadic Culture

To truly understand Mongolia, you have to understand its nomadic heart.

For thousands of years, Mongolians have lived in harmony with the vast steppe, moving with their herds and the seasons. This way of life has shaped our language, culture, and identity.

Learning Mongolian isn’t just about memorizing words; it’s about understanding the world through the eyes of its speakers.

Today, I’m going to share some of the most essential Mongolian words related to our nomadic heritage. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but a simple starting point to help you grasp the core concepts of nomadic life.

The home: The Ger (Гэр)

You might have heard the word “yurt”, but in Mongolia, our traditional home is called a гэр (ger). The word “yurt” actually comes from a Turkic language and refers more to the land a tent is on, not the tent itself. A гэр is a masterpiece of engineering—portable, warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.

Here are the basic parts of a гэр:

The herd: Livestock (Мал)

For a nomadic family, livestock, or мал (mal), is everything. It’s their wealth, their food source, and their transportation. The traditional five main types of livestock are called the таван хошуу мал (tavan khoshuu mal), or the “five snouts.”
